James-Brent Styan has a way of writing which makes for easy reading, while transporting the reader back in time, leaving me with the feeling that I had been witness to this amazing event which took place. I could not put Heartbreaker down.
Even as a South African, I did not know too much about what actually transpired during the 1st heart transplant. This book takes you through the extremely interesting stories building up to the transplant and then follows the life of a great South African who certainly lived a colorful life even during a time when South Africa saw things only in black and white.
Most interesting. I had to read as I had a heart transplant over 22 yeats ago.
This well resourced book is a pleasure to read. It covers the life and times of a genius surgeon Chris Barnard, who against odds, beat all others to perform the world's first human heart transplant. He constantly spoke out and acted against the apartheid regime in South Africa, yet was a staunch patriot - an aspect poorly understood or accepted by many in other countries. He was disappointed not to be awarded a Nobel prize for his achievement. But this did not fulfil the prize requirements which relates to discoveries rather than activities. Styan's writing is so clear and comprehensible that the book cannot be put down until the final page.
