I thought this book was very difficult to read. Everything is put into an old testament vernacular. Very misleading!I have no issues with Christianity, however, this book is only for people that have no ability to think and blindly follow whatever BS they are being fed that day. Buy something else. That's what I did.
If you are entering into a step family, you NEED this book! It is so good at dealing with the struggles of 2nd (or more) marriages with children. It's such a hard transition, so please do yourself and your children a favor and read this book. It is also good for the ex-spouse that has to deal with their children's new step-parent. It's easy to read and very practical.
Wow, if you're in a stepfamily, or getting ready to create one, this book is invaluable! I HIGHLY recommend reading this BEFORE marrying into a stepfamily because it will shape how you interact with the family from the outset and position you for success.
My husband and I are leading a small group at our church. We're using the video series along with the book. We have two engaged couples, a couple who has been married for 4-5 years and another couple who have been married for 25 years. Each lesson so far has been applicable to everyone. The discussions within the group at the end of the lessons have been really good and helpful to those just starting out on the journey. One of the engaged women grew up in a difficult step-family situation so her point-of-view has been great for a man who is still trying to mend relationships after 20+ years of marriage. I would highly recommend this book! I think it should be required for pre-marital classes involving children of any age.
This book is an excellent guide to explain many of the challenges that arise in blended families and how to best deal with them! However, there were too many scenarios that I couldn't relate to because my blended family is a result of my divorce and my husband's previous wife dying. I would have been able to benefit more if the book would have elaborated on instances when one parent remarries after the other parent has passed away. Most of the examples given in the book are tailored for blended families as a result of divorce only. Nonetheless, still a good read!
This is a must read for blended families. Everyone needs this in their toolkit if they are entering into a blended family situation. It would even be a good read for extended families to read so that they gain and understanding of the dynamics of co-parenting with bonus children. Our church offers a Sunday Class called the Smart Stepfamily and we use this book as a guide to educate bonus parents on how to successfully manage the dynamics of their family.
Christian based, with lots of good advice for step families. There were many things about step families that surprised me, but helped me as I began this "adventure" in my life.
This book gave me a lot of great food for thought. I like how it tried to point out different aspects of stepfamily life that people in different situations might need. I found it encouraging and am looking forward to doing a small group on the topic with others who also have stepfamilies.
