I watched the entire 6 seasons of the TV series about 5 years after it was on television. Got to see all the episodes without the commercials on Netflix. What prompted my attention was becoming aware of this book by Dr. Devlin. The show presented a series of math "solutions" to the crimes depicted on the show, and I was able to see all of them in about a month's time since the commercials were removed. I then read Keith Devlin's book. I've considered him a superb writer about the field of mathematics, and "game theory," in particular....the show was primarily based on the use of game theory concepts.Whether you have seen the shows or not, Dr. Devlin's explanations of each probability technique used in the program was fascinating. I cannot give a book any higher recommendation that this one for understanding the basics of probability and game theory....and that goes for those who are not totally comfortable with mathematics. He makes the concepts understandable regardless of a person's background in math.Superb reading!
I am self-educating. The things offered in this series break into two areas for me. One is the excellent quality of the show from the standpoint of TV standards. Well shot, excellent cast, excellent depiction of human problems, any gross parts of the story important and educational to the story line. The second area is the wonderous one I never got to see before ... mathematics through the eyes of Wolfram math practitioners ... and the practical application to solve serious life problems. I can't say I am going to learn to understand this stuff, but it is so excellently portrayed on this show that I can't imagine anyone not wanting to try. It is even recommended by high school math teachers. And it is FUN! I love it as much as "Lie To Me," which is the psychological training equivalent. Yes, they deal with brutal things, but they show that mankind has a hope of learning to think. I hope I can.
I liked this book. I loved this program Ridley and Tony Scott. That should tell you that is program was put together with care with a cast of extraordinary actors, great scripts ... just everything about this program was "First Class". This book shows the background for this wonderful program and I liked the way the author delivered this !Yes, I think 5 Stars are warranted !
I watch the show when I have the chance. Someone gave it to me as a Christmas gift and to be honest I really wasn't going to read it but I was on vacation and bored. Imagine my surprise when I couldn't put it down. It explains the math techniques used by law enforcement agencies to catch criminals. It's written in a matter of fact way and doesn't get bogged down with math theory. It shows how math can be applied to real life. As an elementary math teacher, I use the show to get my students excited about math...that yes, in fact we do use math everyday without realizing it. It makes it real for my students and the majority of my students love math as much as I do. I'd like to point out that this method doesn't solve crimes but it just points you in the direction of possible suspects. Only a confession or evidence can convict..a person of a crime. I would definitely recommend the book.
Very good if you like the series as I do. It is interesting to see what the math really was that was behind the series. It is also good that it gives a short synopsis of the episodes in the last chapters of the book.
Even if you don't like math you w ill love this show. It is savvy and so well written and cast. And math phobes will even get some of the stuff he does - that is how well it is explained
Good book for everyone
Great book, and worth the price. Fun companion to the tv show.
