It's been years, maybe 2 decades, since I last bought one of these babies, and boy have things changed. The articles are better, but the publication listings are meager compared to years past. I guess this just goes to show how many magazines have gone out of business, but I also can't help but notice there are several magazines that I either subscribe to or have seen on the stands that are not listed in this edition. Not sure what that's all about. In some future edition, they should think about including online venues such as Salon and The Onion and other popular sites that pay writers. Still, this is helpful and worth the price tag.
There a ton of magazines that Writer's Market does not cover. I find it unreasonable that so many state and local magazines are covered but there are a ton of national trade magazines that pay better than local or state magazines. That is not to say that Writer's Market is not a good resource for writers but it leaves so much to be desired. I write only non-fiction and write for a lot of trade magazines that are not in this book. These magazines pay from $300-500 per article averaging 750 words. You guys really need to step up your coverage of trade magazines.The reviewer is a writer and marriage, relationship and sexual coach and is the author of the Kindle book entitled:Sex Education For Adults Secrets To Amazing Sex and Happily Ever After Too
The book just gets better and better. The list of magazines that publish freelance work is comprehensive and look up to date. Plus, the extras are very helpful, such as how much writers should charge for various types of work. This book never disappoints, and this year is the best one so far.
Writer’s Market? What writer’s market? What this book shows is that most publishers will not consider an unsolicited query letter, scarcely any will consider an unsolicited ms, most want only to hear from agents – and if you have an agent, you obviously don’t need this book. Worse, the few publishers that will consider unsolicited, unagented books, take months to respond to the initial query, more months to review the ms if they ask for it, and years to publish the book if they finally accept it. Thus, if your book is at all topical – say, an analysis of immigration policies, or of internal population movements, or of a new series of computer chips, or of new discoveries in cosmology – your analysis will be long out-of-date by the time it is published. The subtitle of this book should be: Don’t give up your day job – or maybe, even, Don’t waste your time.(This review is not based upon personal frustration. I have published five books with mainline trade and academic publishers.)
The gold standard in freelance and writing resources just keeps getting better every year. I always purchase the newest version as soon as it’s available!
This is an invaluable reference for the amateur or professional writer. Many of the articles written in the beginning are regurgitated (Though maybe updated somewhat) from books years prior. However the true value of this is the listings of publishers, agents, contests, etc that are in the latter halfish of the book. I appreciate the detail that's involved in building the level of information that's found in each listing.
Purchased as a gift. I knew of this book from working as a librarian, so when my husband started talking of publishing something, I went looking for a new edition. He is pleased with it. Not sure how helpful it will be, since much of it deals with publishing in magazines, but it has taught him some things he needed to know and inspired some ideas of how to proceed.
It's a very good tool for writers at all levels and contacts. It's an extremely helpful and useful book. Worth every penny.
