I have to say, I am extremely disappointed with Alan Wallace. At this point it seems he is more interested in fame and renown from openly publishing sacred Dzogchen texts on togal and putting himself out there as a "Dzogchen Lineage master" than he is with authentically preserving the lineage to which he is gaining fame off of.The Chetsun Nyingtig is the most sacred practice of all Nyingma high lamas. One of the reasons that it has been so powerful, is that up until a few years ago, the samaya (sacred commitments) had been held purely and it was only given to qualified practitioners. Great masters such as HH Dilgo Khyentse, Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche, HH Khenpo Jigpun and others would severely chastise Alan if they were alive and knew that he was going to openly publish it and have it on Amazon.com for all to buy. The true lineage holders of the Chetsun Nyingtig in the lineage of Khyentse Wangpo were not consulted for this, and if Tsoknyi Rinpoche who wrote a review of this on the back cover knew that Alan was going to openly publish it without restriction, he never would have written the review as he holds the practice of togal as very sacred and never teaches it at any of his retreats!!!Alan claims that it is not up to him to put restrictions, that it is up to the lamas. Well that only works if the book is sold restricted at Dharma bookstores and lamas have to give a written letter of permission for each individual to buy it. If he really thought it is up to the lamas to restrict it, how are they supposed to restrict it if it is on Amazon.com. Also, he claims to be a Dzogchen Lineage lama, so that nullifies what he said since he is a "Dzogchen lama", he should know better. There are those who say that Dzogchen is "self secret", yes it is. However, if an unqualified person reads on practices and views within trekcho and togal, without the proper guidance, explanation, and preparation in meditation, one can create wrong concepts, views, and incorrect practice so that even if in the future they receive teachings and guidance on it, their preconceptions block them from having the actual genuine experience. It is extremely dangerous. HE Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche used to speak at length on the importance of secrecy in Dzogchen for just that reason, and especially in the more advanced practices included in this book. Also, due to having not received the teaching line by line from a qualified master of this lineage, Alan made numerous serious mistakes in his translation. The biggest one I have found so far is near the end of the Lerab Linga text, where he translates it as breathing out of the nose and not the mouth:“Let your breath naturally flow through your nostrils loosely and evenly, without either clenching your teeth or lips or leaving them wide open, practice the gentle breathing in which you hold the breath out for just a moment.”Some lamas even say that the word nose (sna) there may be a mistake (for kha) in the text and that it should actually be mouth. Either way, Lerab Lingpa clearly says to do the gentle breath through parted lips/teeth. In Tibetan he used the phrase “from between” parted lips-teeth but as Alan missed the sentence, then the phrase from between didn’t fit his narrative, so he omitted it altogether!!!The reason this is such a huge error is that the Dzogchen teachings are very clear that the prana of the afflictive emotions flows through the nostrils and the jnana prana flows through the mouth and therefore in Dzogchen you should NOT breath through the nostrils, but rather through the mouth. That is one of the biggest errors I have ever seen in any translation if not the biggest! Alan did not just say breath through the nose, he said DON'T breath through the mouth!!!On page 119, he translates in the second paragraph that the following page ling quote is from Pelgyi Lodroma, when it isn't. The quote is actually word for word what Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo said and the beginning of his speech is based on what Pelgyi Lodroma said. Then on page 120 he translates, "These infallible, authoritative, secret vajra words..." That is the part where it is saying that the quote is the infallible, authoritative, secret vajra words (of Khyentse Wangpo not Pelye Lodroma). In the Introduction he also placed part of that quote and again attributed it to Pelgyi Lodroma when it is clearly from Khyentse Wnagpo and if he had have actually read and studied the very short root terma, he would know that. While Alan did receive the empowerment and brief teaching on it from HH Jigme Phuntsok in the eary 90's, he clearly did not receive the complete teaching and not line by line. HH Jigme Phuntsok had a notoriously difficult accent which Alan did not and does not understand and the translation back then of his live teachings was not completely accurate or complete. If Alan had have received complete word by word explanation of the entire text from His Holines, he never would have made any of the serious mistakes I outline above and below. And if he had have asked HH Jigme Phuntsok to publish this for anyone in the world to read, His Holiness would have firmly said no. And if Alan had published it anyways, HH probably would have disowned him as a disciple as he was extremely strict with the such matters as only people who had the empowerment and teaching being allowed to read a Dzogchen text and especially the Chetsun Nyingtig!UPDATE: I did some research and it seems that Alan lied in his introduction about having received the full teaching on the Lerab Lingpa Chetsun Nyingtig commentary from HH Jigme Phuntsok in New York. HH only gave the Chetsun Nyingtig in Boston and California in 1993 and in Boston Khenpo Namdrol gave a teaching on the preliminaries and in California Khenpo Jigphun taught on the ngondro text itself and his accent was translated into Tibetan by Chagdud Tulku for Richard Baron to translate. So Khenpo Jigphun did not give the Lerab Lingpa commentary to Alan!!! That is a serious offense to lie about such a thing as having the lineage when you don't in your book!I have been reeding this text cover to cover in Tibetan multiple times every year for nearly 20 years and it is one of the most difficult texts to correctly understand if you A) haven't received the teaching from a lineage holder and B) don't know the Nyagrong dialect. I spent a few weeks going over all kinds of oral dialect things with a friend born and raised in that area (who received this teaching together with me) and he said it could be very misunderstood if someone wasn't familiar with the dialect. I wrote about 37 notes on obscure uses of a particular particle and other things. Many that the average reader of Tibetan would overlook and thus misread).Alan claims it was Golok Dialect, NO, it was Nyagrong dialect, not the same. If he didn't even know that.....???Lerab Lingpa was from Nyagrong, not Golok!!! His other famous name was Nyagla Sogyal which means Sogyal, the Lama from Nyagrong. While Khyentse Wangpo and Lerab Lingpa didn't put the Dharma Guardian's injunction on this text, that doesn't mean that they still didn't consider it restricted from those who haven't received togal empowerment and teachings in general from a qualified master!!! If Alan had have told Khyentse Wangpo that he was going to freely distribute it so that various people around the world who were unqualified to read, study, or practice the Chetsun Nyingtig, Khyentse Wangpo would have severely scolded Alan as he was very wrathful and didn't intend for this. Especially an error filled incorrect translation.Again, on page 71, 5th line of the second paragraph, all translators of this section have greatly erred due to an obscure way of using the words "first, middle, last". It literally means "first, second, and third". It is referring to the three methods of resting like mountain, ocean, and the sky. Ie. If you don't sit motionless like a mountain (unmoving body), this will disrupt the second method of resting, like an ocean (motionless eyes and slow breath etc), and that will prevent you from getting the third method of resting like the sky (rigpa)...He also mistranslated the first part of that section as "succumb to good and bad agitations..."That is absolutely wrong, it literally means, if you move your body (or fidget), whether it is for a good or bad (reason). His translation reflects a translator who doesn't understand the author's writing style or dialect and who hasn't received the line by line teaching on it, let alone any teaching on it.As for those readers who are qualified and who have received the Chetsun Nyingtig, I would warn you that there are many serious mistakes and I haven't even read his whole translation yet to know the extent of the damage Alan (the self proclaimed Dzogchen master) has done.In short, don't buy it, don't read it, search out a translation from a qualified translator in this lineage. If you have received the Chetsun Nyingtig, then it is available. I know that there is a new one (not Richard Baron's) that might be good.Lastly, Alan said that he followed Gyatrul Rinpoche's previous injunction on restriction for the Vajra Heart, so that implies that Gyatrul Rinpoche didn't know that Alan was going to freely publish a text on Chetsun Nyingtig and put it on Amazon.com.The very beginning of the commentary is on the Chetsun Nyingtig empowerment, if you haven't received the empowerment, why Alan would even think that the uninitiated could read it is beyond me. As Tsoknyi Rinpoche says, if you practice shamatha wrong, you can become stupid, maybe Alan's devotion to shamatha practice and its nine stages has caused his discerning mind to decline???And how he could publish a translation that is so wrong and filled with serious errors is also beyond my comprehension!!!Please remember, just because something looks nice in English does NOT at all mean that it reflects the original at all or that it is not filled with serious errors! For any translator of this text, best is to receive line by line teaching on it from someone from Nyagrong or Thromtar, and not just someone from there, but a lineage holder of this text who is intimately familiar with it and can unlock all of its abbreviated nuances. If I could have given this book negative five stars I would have.

This book is a treasure by Dr. B. Alan Wallace. S108 wrote a review that would appear to reflect some scholarly jealousy, and S108 won't even identify himself or his qualifications. Dr. Wallace has PhD from Stanford in religion, has translated for HH Dalai Lama, as well as being his direct disciple. S108 hides behind his typing anonymously and is basically saying HH was incorrect in endorsing. Tsoknyi Rinpoche, I am sure, was also not duped. Private texts do not need endorsements so pretty obvious he also endorsed public availability. Read Spacious Path to Freedom by Gyatrul Rinpoche. It has all these same teachings so S108 must be critical of Gyatrul Rinpoche too. S108 does not seem to have rid him or herself of anger or jealousy so their practice is still a work in progress.I would also like to add that many teachings are private, invitation only. S108 may not have known about, or was not invited to, possibly private teachings. Many high teachings are done without public knowledge. I sincerely doubt Dr. Wallace would lie about such things. Translation errors? Possible. But to accuse someone like Dr Wallace of lying in a public forum, to claim to be able to speak for other highly regarded teachers without identifying him or herself? Truly disheartening that anyone claiming to be Buddhist would do such a thing.

A deep heart felt thank you for translating this detailed and beautiful text of Chetsun's Heart Essence as revealed to Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo via Lerab Lingpa. And thank you again for releasing it without restriction to the world. Those still standing after encountering the main text will surely experience the decisive knockout while absorbing the supporting texts. A true gem in the crown of Dzokchen.

Brilliantly written, but you need a sharp mind to follow at times. Not for beginners, allthough I am one of those. It helps to follow B.Alan Wallace's podcasts at SBI Media.

Still reading it - enjoying it so far.
